Team Spirit and Strategy

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate is probably the best-known and fastest team sport in frisbee — where speed and athleticism meet maximum fairness. Two teams try to move the disc across the field with skilful passes and catch it in the opponent's end zone. Since physical contact is forbidden, excellent body control and pinpoint teamwork are the keys to success.

Probably the fairest team sport in the world

What makes Ultimate special: it is played even at World Championship level without external referees. All decisions are made by the players on the field themselves. This self-regulating philosophy, the "Spirit of the Game", is paramount. After each game, teams rate each other in categories such as fair play and communication. This spirit score is often just as coveted as the tournament win itself. Ultimate is also frequently played in "mixed mode", where women and men compete together on the same team — a true model for modern, inclusive sport.

Ultimate Frisbee
A Sport on the Rise

What began in New Jersey in the late 1960s almost by accident — students at Columbia High School started tossing the pie tins of the "Frisbie Baking Company" to each other — has since grown into a serious competitive sport. In Germany, around 200 clubs with over 10,000 members are now registered with the association, and the national teams are among the European elite. At the last World Championship in 2024 on the Gold Coast, the German teams finished in the top 7 worldwide across the Open, Women's and Mixed categories. And at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, the German Mixed Ultimate Frisbee team again came in an impressive fourth place. After strong performances in the group stage, the team narrowly missed a medal, but was honoured as the fairest team with the "Spirit Award".

The Bavarian Open in Munich

As part of the Frisbee Festival, we are hosting the Bavarian Open, an Ultimate Frisbee tournament in the so-called hat format. This is a special form of competition where teams do not arrive as fixed squads — instead, individuals of all ages and genders sign up on their own. The focus here is on meeting new players, having fun and embodying the Spirit of the Game, rather than the fierce competitive mindset of regular championships. It's still the perfect opportunity to experience the dynamics of the game up close, to witness spectacular "layouts" (diving catches) and to soak up the electrifying atmosphere on the sidelines.
